Now the Journey has Begun...
They say every great adventure begins with one step.
J.R.R Tolkien’s wizardry character, Gandalph, also told Frodo once…
“IT'S A DANGEROUS BUSINESS, FRODO, GOING OUT YOUR DOOR. YOU STEP ONTO THE ROAD, AND IF YOU DON'T KEEP YOUR FEET, THERE'S NO KNOWING WHERE YOU MIGHT BE SWEPT OFF TO.”
Both sayings are so equally true, and whilst there may be pitfalls, dead ends and wrong turns along the way, the only one who can really influence the turn of your adventure is yourself. Will you give up at the first hurdle? No. What about the third? Maybe you’ll come across an obstacle that appears too deep to swim, too high to climb or too far to jump. What then? Is it time to turn back and opt for the safer route that leads you to second best?
I cannot speak for everyone, but given a penny for my thoughts, they would be this:
The first step is always the hardest, so why give up when the best is yet to come? It may be hard, it may be daunting, and along the way you may fail time and time again, but any dream worth having, any real accomplishment, is one that deserves enduring perseverance.
Think where we would be if Alexander Graham Bell had given up after his first failure, or Tim Berners-Lee had dismissed the concept of the internet as folly. And before the invention of human flight, anyone who suggested we would be able to fly across the world would have been thrown into a terrifyingly dingy mental hospital to undergo ‘treatment’ for their insanity.
We all need dreams, we all need adventures but neither need be big, for there is also something warm and comfortable, safe and homely, about the familiarity of our day-to-day lives and habits. Some love the comfort and security of the four walls of their home, whilst others need to see the world. Others dream of changing the world whilst others are just content to live in it. I myself know I am never going to change the world but I don’t mind; I’m quite happy being me.
But my world and the world are very different things, so with my best foot forward I’m heading for a change. I’m heading for my dream…
